Displacing Coal

While B.C. has developed an abundance of clean and renewable energy sources to power our economy, many jurisdictions around the globe are still reliant on fossil fuels.

Nations like China rely on greenhouse gas-intensive fuels like thermal coal for their electricity generation. That is why B.C.’s clean liquefied natural gas (LNG) represents such an important opportunity to reduce global emissions.

For every tonne of Chinese thermal coal displaced by B.C. LNG, 1.16 tonnes of emissions are avoided. By replacing Chinese thermal coal with clean B.C. LNG, we can help China reduce up to 55 million tonnes of annual emissions.

This also represents a $50 trillion economic opportunity for B.C., one we are uniquely positioned to secure. B.C. has a world-class supply of natural gas, our colder climate means turbines run more efficiently, and our proximity to Asia means lower shipping times than LNG coming from the US Gulf Coast. coast.

Beyond the benefits of reducing global emissions, using LNG instead of coal in China would reduce smog and lower rates of asthma, bronchitis, lung cancer and heart disease.
